Coaching

Hornsby Heights netball relies on volunteers to coach our U18 players each year. Experienced and new coaches 13 years and over are welcome, with support provided throughout the year. The coaching coordinator, in conjunction with the club committee, has the final decision for allocating coaches to all U18 teams. Senior teams are responsible for arranging their own coach if they want one.

 The coach’s primary responsibilities include:

  • always fostering a spirit of fair play and sportsmanship.

  • following the fair play policy by ensuring all players within the team have equal time on court to develop their skills in a safe and fun environment.

  • encouraging players to respect one another and to expect respect for their worth as individuals regardless of their level of play.

  • encouraging and facilitating players’ independence and responsibility for their own bbehavior, performance, decisions and actions.

  • encouraging players to think for themselves and develop into self-motivated players.

  • adapting and modifying coaching practices and activities to ensure that every participant – regardless of age, gender, ability level, disability and ethnic background – is included.

  • coordinating effective training sessions for the team each week.

  • communicating effectively to players, manager, parents and other coaches/club executive.

It is a requirement of all Hornsby Heights netball coaches to:

  • adhere to the NSW Netball Code of Behaviour policy www.nsw.netball.com.au

  • hold a current Working with Children Clearance in accordance with the NSW State Government requirement for people aged 18+ who have a role which involves working with children. Detailed information is available from the Office of the Children’s Guardian Website: http://www.kidsguardian.nsw.gov.au

  • complete the Netball NSW Member Protection Declaration.

Teams can only be registered with KNA when they have a coach and manager. Managers are always a parent/guardian of a player in the team. If we do not have enough volunteer coaches for each team, parents will be asked to select a parent/guardian from within the team to be the coach. It is recommended that coaches have a sound knowledge and understanding of netball however support is available for those new to coaching or wanting to develop their skills. Coaches are supported by the club to develop their coaching skills in a variety of ways including mentoring, training manuals, subsidised course attendance.
